Hand Made

Rugs are extremely rich in culture and each one has a story behind it. A handmade rug is like a painting. Created over centuries in villages by tribal families and in cities by professional craftsmen, the designs which grace handmade rugs hold complex, symbolic meanings often closely related to nature. Each weaving region possesses it’s own unique stylistic characteristics; they are particular in their use of symbolism, imagery, choice of materials and technique of production.

The design of a rug is identified by the way in the layout and decorative motifs are interpreted and articulated. Rug patterns usually fall into three catergories; geometric (straight lines and shapes), curvilinear or floral (curving lines) and pictorial (pictures usually of people and/or animals).

Tribal rugs tend to be geometric in design, the villagers and nomads who generally weave these pieces free hand, without the use of a 'cartoon' (a blueprint of a rug design).
